La Coutellerie de Laguiole proposes cutlery sessions. They allow each individual to make his own knife from beginning to end with the help of a professional cutler who will help one along the whole session.
You will get yourself involved in the making of a mythical product. You will know an outstanding experience and feel everyday the pleasure to use the knife tou have made.

Whom are those sessions intended for?
To anyone practical and handyman. You need to wear clothes appropriate to the worshop such as overalls, working coats. Avoid wearing shorts and open summer shoes.

Who is teaching?
Depending on his availability Jean-Michel CAYRON, laureate of the Prix Artisans et Métiers d'Art de l'an 2000, will be the cutler-teacher during the session.

The session program
(This schedule is given as an indication and can vary according to the number of person, the craft of the apprentice...)

  • 09H00 : You will be welcomed by Jean-Michel Cayron, laureate of the Prix Artisan et Métiers d’Art de l’An 2000
  • 09H15 : The session will begin :
    • You will be presented the workshop and tolls.
    • You will be presented the different separate parts you will use to make your knife.
    • The methods used in the manufacturing of the knife and its chronology will be explained to you.
  • 09H45 : you will select the separate parts you wish to use to create your knife.
  • 10H00 : You will adjust the handle on the plates and prepair the parts to be fitted.
  • 12H00 : End of the morning session.
  • 13H30 : You will start to assemble the knife.
  • 17H30 : You will finish off the knife and complete the last alterations.
  • 18H30 : End of the cutlery session.

Price of the session : 620,05€ including all taxes for an 8 hours session
This price corresponds to the session and you can up to 4 persons

Price of the raw materials.
The raw materials (the parts of the knife) are charged extra and we give the price on the estimate. Thus, each customer can make his own knife with the handle he wants.
A price selection for the raw materials :
- a 11 cm 1 piece knife with 2 brass bolsters, horn tip handle, chiselled spring, massive bee : 24,80 € including all taxes
- a 12 cm 1 piece knife with 2 brass bolsters, horn tip handle, chiselled spring, massive bee : 26,60 € including all taxes
- a 12 cm 1 piece knife with 2 stainless steel bolsters, horn tip handle, chiselled spring, massive bee : 27,20 € including all taxes
- a 12 cm 2 pieces prestige range knife (with corkscrew), wood handle, 2 brass stainless steel bolsters, chiselled spring, massive bee : 28,30 € including all taxes

IMPORTANT :
- Due to technical reasons we do not propose the making of three pieces knive (the mechanism is too complicated to fit).
- For your first approach to cutlery we advise against expensive materials such as ivory, mammouth bone, rare wood).

Insurance and responsability
The company has got a special insurance for this type of service but nonetheless we ask each trainee for a paper saying we are not responsible in case of accident. This paper will also be used as a bill for the service of assistance in manufacturing in our premises.

Payment
Down payment: 30 % when booking.
The rest is to be paid at the beginning of the cutlery session.
